"Together, we achieve."

Her Majesty the Queen

Queen Elizabeth II  1926-2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to a new school year at West Hampstead Primary.

I am sure you will share the deep sense of loss at the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning British monarch, who has been a figure of stability throughout all our lives. Our deepest condolences are with the Royal Family.

We have now entered a period of national mourning that will continue until the end of the State Funeral. Although there is no obligation for schools and settings to observe particular behaviours during the mourning period, we will be using this time to reflect and talk about our own feelings and reactions to such a sad event.

Today we had a special whole school assembly to celebrate the extraordinary life and contribution that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II made.  There will be a follow-up assembly next week to talk about it in detail.

We know that school communities will be greatly affected by this news. However, schools have been advised to remain open and normal attendance is expected.

Many children will have questions and worries about this news, but those who have experienced the death of someone important or who have an ill family member might be particularly worried. There are a wide range of additional agencies offering support. The websites below offer more specific support:

·                         is a source of information to support children and young people, as well as staff, to manage death and loss

At this stage we have no further information regarding school closures for the state funeral, or for the subsequent coronation day, but this will be shared once known.

Best wishes Sam Drake, Headteacher
