Year 1

Welcome!

                                                                                                             April 2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back! We hope that you enjoyed your holidays and are well rested for the busy term ahead.

In year 1, children will continue to learn through an integrated curriculum approach but as the term progresses we will be begin to transition to more formal learning. This is to prepare the children for year 2.

Topic

Our Topics this term are ‘Carnival of the animals’ which is based around our class text ‘One day on our blue planet’ and ‘Travellers’. The children will have plenty of opportunities to extend their geographical knowledge and develop their skills in historical enquiry as well as learning through art and design technology.  At the end of the term, we will be able to share the children’s learning with you which has been documented on Tapestry.

English and Maths

In English we will be developing reading and writing skills, supporting children to spell words using their knowledge of letter sounds, and introducing the children to a wide range of texts. The children will continue to have daily reading activities and read to us during guided reading sessions.

Phonics will continue and the children will be sitting their phonics screenings in June. Results will be shared with you via the children’s reports.

Weekly spellings will be sent home this term so children can practice spelling the key words from year 1. They will be tested every Friday and you will be provided with their test result as well as the next week’s spellings.  We will also continue to send home the phonics word lists until the screening takes place. These words are for you to practice at home and consolidate but there is no need for the children to bring them back into school.

In Maths, learning will be developed through the use of equipment and picture representations as well as numbers. We appreciate your support in practising counting to 100 and adding and subtracting numbers within 50. The children have practiced telling the time to the hour and half past and this is also something you can work on with them at home.

Learning with parents will continue each week for homework. You will be notified by email when new topics are released. If you haven’t received any notifications, then please log into or sign up for

learnings with parents.

Reading

The children’s home reading books will be changed once a week on a Thursday afternoon where children will be provided with 1-2 books that can be read across the week. Please support their progress in reading by listening to them at home every night and asking questions about what they have read. You might ask about what happened, what they think will happen next, and how characters are feeling/behaving. Each child has a Reading Record for you or the children to make comments.

PE

PE this term will take place on Monday mornings. Children need to wear their P.E. kit to school as they will be starting P.E directly after guided reading. The school P.E. kit consists of a white t-shirt, green shorts and trainers. No jewellery, apart from ear studs, should be worn.

General information

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that school is open from 8.50am and lessons start at 9:05. Thank you for your support in ensuring school uniform is worn consistently. Jewellery, with the exception of stud earrings, is not allowed for safety reasons. As a Healthy School, packed lunches should promote healthy eating habits and not include sweets, chocolate bars or fizzy drinks. All children at Beckford now celebrate their birthday at school with a song and a sticker.  Please note that we do not accept cakes, party bags or any sort of ‘treats’ for the class.
