Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Year 3! It has been fantastic having everybody back at school after such a long time out. We hope that you had a good summer and are well rested for the busy year ahead. This term the children will be learning:
Our Topics this term are ‘Field to fork’, which is based around our school theme of ‘Journeys’, and ‘Victorian Schools’, which is based around the school theme of ‘Making A Difference.’ The children will have plenty of opportunities to extend their geographical knowledge and develop their skills in historical enquiry as well as learning through art and design technology. At the end of the term, we will find a way of sharing our work with you.
In English we will be developing reading and writing skills, supporting children to spell words using their knowledge of letter sounds, and introducing the children to a wide range of texts. We will be working with the children to develop their spoken language skills. The children will have daily reading activities and read to us during guided reading sessions. We will be focusing on developing fine motor skills as this will support their handwriting and would appreciate your support with handwriting practice. Weekly spellings will be sent out for at-home practice starting from next week and spelling tests will be held on Fridays.
The children’s home reading books can be changed daily and children will be encouraged to self-select appropriate colour banded texts independently. Each child has a Reading Record for you or the children to make comments in each day. These must be brought in daily. To support their learning, please ensure that your child reads at home for 15-20 minutes every day. You can also support them by asking them when/why/what and how questions about what they have read. Children earn stickers when they read at home. These contribute to certificates and your child will be awarded a book as prize once they have earned 3 certificates!
In Maths, learning will be developed through the use of practical equipment and pictures as well as numbers. The children will be practising their times tables for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables then moving onto learning the 3 and 4 times tables. This is something that you can also support at home using https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button. Maths with Parents will be replaced with a website called Mathletics will support their development and this will be set for homework as the year progresses. Your child will be given their log-ins next week.
PE this term will be on Wednesday afternoons. Please ensure that your child is wearing the correct PE kit when they come to school on Wednesday morning; they will wear their kit throughout the day and will not need to change in school. Mersey will be going swimming every Wednesday afternoon for the first half of the year and Thames class for the second half (after the February half term holiday).
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that school gates open at 8:50am and school finishes at 3:30pm. Thank you for your support in ensuring school uniform is worn consistently. Jewellery, with the exception of stud earrings, is not allowed for safety reasons. As a Healthy School, packed lunches and snacks should promote healthy eating habits and not include sweets, chocolate bars or fizzy drinks. All children at West Hampstead Primary now celebrate their birthday at school with a song and a sticker. Please note that we do not accept cakes, party bags or any sort of ‘treats’ for the class.
We will be using Class Dojo to reward children with Dojo points for engagement, achievement, effort and displaying the school values.
Thank you for the brilliant start to the year so far, the children have been amazing and we are looking forward to a great year. If you have any further questions, please email us at email@example.com
Please come and meet the team and find out more about Year Three learning and homework at the upcoming parent event on Wednesday 22nd September between 3:45 and 4:45pm. Further information will follow.
